Masks are the first line of defense in healthcare settings and epidemic prevention. However, many procurement officers and medical staff still confuse the essential differences between medical surgical masks and N95 respirators. As a manufacturer with 36 years of experience in R&D and production of medical consumables, we break down the core differences from a professional perspective to help you make accurate choices

1.Core Parameter Comparison

Comparison Dimension

Medical Surgical Mask

N95 Medical Respirator

Protection Level

Medium protection

High-level respiratory protection

Core Function

Blocks droplets and body fluid splashes

Blocks droplets + aerosols + fine particles

Application Scenarios

General outpatient, wards, routine diagnosis

Fever clinics, isolation wards, aerosol-generating procedures

Structural Features

3-layer structure, moderate facial fit

5-layer structure, with nose clip + elastic ear loops, excellent seal

International Standards

EN 14683 Type IIR / ASTM F2100 Level 2

NIOSH 42 CFR Part 84 / EN 14683 Type IIR+

2. In-depth Interpretation of Key Differences

2.1 Different Protection Principles

Medical surgical masks mainly work through physical barrier to intercept large droplets and body fluids produced by patients when coughing or speaking, and prevent the medical staff's nasal and oral secretions from contaminating the surgical area.

N95 respirators adopt a dual mechanism of electrostatic adsorption + physical filtration, which can effectively filter 0.3μm fine particles and aerosols in the air. This is the most core difference between the two.

2.2 Different Stringency of Certification Standards

Medical surgical masks need to meet EN 14683 or ASTM F2100 standards, focusing on bacterial filtration efficiency and liquid penetration resistance.

In addition to the above requirements, N95 respirators must also pass NIOSH certification, with additional assessments on particle filtration efficiency, breathing resistance and fit, requiring more stringent production environments and testing procedures.

3. How to Choose Correctly

· Routine diagnosis, general wards, public areas: Prioritize medical surgical masks, balancing protection and comfort

· High-risk operations such as fever clinics, nucleic acid sampling, tracheal intubation: Must use N95 medical respirators

· When purchasing in bulk: Be sure to confirm that the supplier has ISO13485 certification and the products meet the access standards of the target market

All mask products of JIANDA MEDICAL are produced in 100,000-level GMP purification workshops, using fully automated production lines and complete quality inspection processes to ensure that each batch of products meets international standards.
