What exactly is the difference between "N95 masks" and "KN95 masks"?

Is an "N95 mask" the same as a "medical protective mask"?The "N95 mask" we often refer to is actually not equivalent to a "medical protective mask"!N95 masks comply with the US standard 42CFR84, which requires a filtration efficiency of ≥95%.Medical protective masks, on the other hand, comply with the Chinese standard GB19083-2010.In fact, those with a filtration efficiency of ≥95% are Class 1 medical protective masks—commonly known as "N95-level medical protective masks". They are essentially the same in performance but named differently due to distinct domestic and foreign standards. Remember to look for the "medical" label.

What is a "particulate respirator"?A "particulate respirator" refers to a mask that meets the Chinese standard GB2626-2019.Among them, those conforming to this standard with a filtration efficiency of ≥95% are the "KN95 particulate respirators" we often mention. This type of mask has filtration requirements and protection levels equivalent to medical N95 masks, and can be used for respiratory protection of people in high-risk areas.

What is the difference between "N95-level medical protective masks" and "KN95 particulate respirators"?First, their full Chinese names differ. Due to different applicable standards, their names vary, and each has strict specifications.Second, the recommended usage scenarios are mainly different. Although both masks have a filtration efficiency of up to 95%, N95-level medical protective masks can also meet medical protection requirements such as blocking splashes of blood, body fluids, and surface moisture resistance. They are more suitable for medical staff in high-risk scenarios like direct contact with patients or infected persons. In contrast, KN95 particulate respirators are better for environments with exposure to potential pollutants, overseas imports, or high risks of pollution transmission. They are also suitable for daily wear in high-density public places and other travel scenarios.

The Mask Wearing Guidelines suggest that the cumulative wearing time should not exceed 8 hours. Replace the mask when it reaches the end of its service life.Additionally, if the mask is found damaged or soiled during wearing, it should be replaced promptly.
