Donning and Doffing Procedures and Precautions for Protective Gown

Donning and Doffing Procedures for Protective Gown 

1. Donning Protective Gear (Clean Area)

First, prepare in the clean area. Clean hands using the six-step handwashing technique, tie back hair and put on a hair cap, wear a face mask, and put on work clothes and work shoes. If there is skin damage, put on a pair of gloves first.

2. Donning Protective Gown (Potentially Contaminated Area)

After entering the potentially contaminated area, select a properly fitting piece of protective gown. Put on the lower part first, then the upper part, wear the hood, and zip up the gown.

After putting on the protective gown, wear a medical protective face shield or medical protective goggles as needed, put on medical examination gloves or disposable sterile rubber surgical gloves, put on disposable medical shoe covers, and put on a second pair of gloves before entering the contaminated area for operations.

3. Doffing Protective Gear (Contaminated Area)

In the contaminated area, first remove the gloves, disinfect hands, and take off the protective face shield or goggles: pinch the side near the head or ear to remove it, and discard it into a medical waste container.

4. Doffing Protective Gown (Contaminated Area)

First, take off the protective gown. Pull the zipper all the way down, pull the hood upward to remove it from the head, then take off the sleeves, and remove the gown from top to bottom while rolling it up, with the contaminated side inward. After removal, place it into a medical waste bag. Then take off the shoe covers, and wash or disinfect hands.

After leaving the contaminated area and entering the potentially contaminated area, you can take off the work clothes, remove the medical protective face mask and hair cap. After entering the clean area, take a shower, change clothes, and then leave the clean area.

Precautions for Donning and Doffing Protective Gown

  • Protective gown shall only be put on and taken off in designated areas.
  • Protective gown shall be replaced every 4 hours.
  • Before doffing the protective gown, you must first enter a dedicated room, wash hands with disinfectant, and then take off the protective face shield. After removing each layer, you must wash your hands using the six-step handwashing technique before removing the next layer. Remove the layers from the outside to the inside, and wash your hands after each removal. After completing the doffing process, you must also wash your hands with running water at least three times, then wash your face, clean the nasal cavity, ears, and the back of the ears. Finally, take a shower in the changing room before exiting.
